Write at The Riverside

Write at The Riverside

Who’s it for?

Write at The Riverside a five week course aimed at year 5/6 students.

What’s it about?

The emotive genre of sports journalism is explored in two hour sessions alongside the instructional style of a recipe book.

What does it involve?

The specific lanaguage tools used by both sports journalism and recipe writing are closely examined and students’ own skills in these areas are developed as they create a ‘Recipie for Success’ in a poem based on a football match.

Throughout the project we use industry standard video technology to bring the poetry to life. The students combine archive football footage or scenes that they have shot themselves, with their poetry forming the soundtrack, to create their very own movie. Music, titles and effects are also added to enhance dramatic effect and add a the final polish to an impressive piece of work.

What’s the benefit?

Write at The Riverside will develop students’ literacy skills…

  • sentence structure
  • use of punctuation
  • vocabulary development
  • spelling
  • poem structure

and the performing part of the course will develop…

  • confidence
  • self-esteem
  • communication skills
  • presentation skills
  • team work

On top of that, at the end of every Write at The Riverside programme a DVD containing all of the students’ movies is produced. Our staff visit a school assembly or class room presentation and showcase the students’ talents and achievements. Each child involved in the course gets a copy of the DVD as a memento of their participation in the programme and to share with their family.
