Read at The Riverside

Read at The Riverside

Who’s it for?

Read at The Riverside a five week course aimed at year 3/4 pupils.

What’s it about?

Each week the children are engaged in a two hour carousel of literacy rich activites that have been designed to be both interactive and kinaesthetic and closely linked to the literacy requirements of National Curriculum.

What does it involve?

A series of exciting and humorous books form the core of the project. Good News, Bad News and Cinderboy are just two of the stories that the children will use to create a television news programme to tell the stories in their own unique way. The children become part of the story, playing the role of characters from the stories and news presenters in the studio, all in theatrical costume.

Part of the session is spent working on spelling and structuring stories using the latest animation software, another part is spent reading and investigating the books with additional time reserved for rehearsal and performance in the TV studio.

Our television studio complete with green screen technology allows us to transport ourselves from the already impressive setting of the Riverside Stadium to anywhere in the world universe! And with books ranging from Snow White in New York to Here Come the Aliens, we’ll need lots of different scenes!

What’s the benefit?

Read at The Riverside will develop children’s literacy skills…

  • sentence structure
  • use of punctuation
  • vocabulary development
  • spelling
  • story structure

and the performing part of the course will develop…

  • confidence
  • self-esteem
  • communication skills
  • presentation skills
  • team work

On top of that, at the end of every Read at The Riverside programme a DVD of the children’s mini news bulletin is produced. Our staff visit a school assembly or class room presentation and showcase the children’s talents and achievements. Each child involved in the course gets a copy of the DVD as a memento of their participation in the programme and to share with their family.
