As well as our traditional end of term celebration where youngsters who took part in courses with us are awarded certificates and prizes for their achievements, the event was an opportunity of us to showcase and indeed premier three films that Middlesbrough youngsters have produced, supported by the Lottery through the UK Film Council’s First Light initiative.

As we don’t always get access to the press room and we don’t always get the weather to go pitch side the youngsters performed in front of a green screen and the background was superimposed afterwards.

Banardo’s the children’s charity has been awarded the contact to provide for young carers of Middlesbrough. Read on for photos and the audio podcast. The Junction, based in Redcar, had previously been provider for both Redcar & Cleveland and Middlesbrough. This means that the youngsters who come from these areas will be split, Redcar residents remain with The Junction whilst youngsters living in Middlesbrough will be provided for by the new Banardo’s bid. We packed out the Radio Riverside studio with youngsters from The Junction to give their reaction to the news. The scheme is to encourage the use of bikes, scooters and other non-motorised transportation as a means of getting to school rather than by car.

All of the students were involved in the event are were clear on the benefits of taking part and enjoyed starting the day in a different way.

Below are some short podcasts containing their own ‘Bike It’ jingles, pre-recorded ‘voxpops’ all wrapped up with their own style of presentation.

In their first session the students reported on an up coming ‘World Book Week’ event at school where they were invited to arrive at school dressed in the costume of their favourite character from their favourite books. This introductory task allowed the students to get to grips with our sophisticated recording equipment and learn the skills that they would be using throughout the course.

They’ve been on a tour around the Riverside Stadium and liked it so much that they’ve made their own radio ads.

Using metaphor and simile, students created a piece of poetry describing what it was like to see Juninho play. They produced posters containing their poetry with ComicLife on the Mac and the moved into the studio. Standing in front of the Riverside Studios cameras the students performed a role play of their poetry.

They’ve been approaching problem solving a little differently though! Working in a radio agony aunt scenario, the students answer maths problems that have been sent in by listeners in simple, easy to follow steps.
